Pediatric Concussions and Physical Therapy

Getting the news that your child has a concussion can be scary. What should you expect? Who can help? Here are the steps you should take for your child if they have a concussion or you suspect they have a concussion.

See a Doctor

If your child has a concussion or you suspect your child has a concussion, it is important to see a doctor right away. They will be able to run the necessary tests and provide initial recommendations for school and sports. Your pediatrician may be a good choice, but it may be better to see a neurologist who is skilled in pediatric concussion management. At the end of your visit with your doctor, be sure to ask for a physical therapy referral!

Schedule an Assessment with a Therapist who is Trained in Concussion Management

A physical therapist who is trained in concussion management will help your child have the best recovery. A PT will assess your child’s symptoms, determine a plan of action, and guide you through the recovery process. After a concussion, your child may experience headaches, dizziness, unsteadiness, tiredness, irritability, or visual disturbances. Your pediatric PT will assess the severity of these symptoms and provide exercises and strategies to manage them.

Be Consistent with Concussion Management Strategies

Your pediatric physical therapist will create a personalized treatment plan with concussion management strategies. The plan may include a walking program, treatment of the neck and spine, movement tolerance training, and visual motor exercises to treat any symptoms your child may have. In order for your child to have the most successful recovery, you must be consistent in using these strategies with your child. Your PT will continue to work with you and your child throughout the process, progressing exercises until your child is feeling fully recovered.

Have Realistic Expectations and be Patient

Concussion recovery takes a long time! It’s a brain injury, and it is important to take recovery time seriously. Typical concussion recovery takes about a month, and there are many factors that may increase recovery time. The goal should never be to return to sport or activity before your child is ready or before they have been cleared by their neurologist. Your physical therapist will be able to help guide you through the return to activity timeline so you can feel confident that your child is safely incorporating movements and activities into their daily routines.
